Background:
John Fennell is part of the next generation of Canadian luge. He was just a 14-year-old spectator at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games, but that solidified his Olympic dream.
Fennell was hooked after his first luge run in 2006 during a “Learn to Luge” session at Canada Olympic Park. He got a taste of the Olympic experience when he competed in the 2012 Youth Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck and finished seventh. John finished his 2011-2012 season ranked 1st overall making him the Youth Champion for that year. After competing on the Junior World Cup circuit in 2012-13, Fennell made his debut at the senior world championships on his home track in Whistler in 2013 where he finished 24th. But his time was good enough to earn him the bronze medal in the under-23 world championships. That came after he had finished 13th at the 2013 World Junior Championships in Park City, Utah. John finished his first full season on the senior circuit in the 2013-14 season, and achieved his Olympic dream as a member of Team Canada in Sochi. After a four-run combined time, John finished 27th. John was born in Denver, Colorado but now calls Calgary his home base after living and training there full time for well over a decade. In June of 2013, he graduated from National Sport School and now attends the University of Calgary while trying to pursue a business degree. In his spare time, John enjoys hiking, skiing, fishing, and hanging out with black lab named Duke. Building on a valuable experience gained at the 2014 Games, John’s eyes are now focused squarely on the next four years on Pyeongchang 2018.
