Theo Downey

Theo started his journey with luge at the age of nine when he was attending a freestyle skiing dryland training session at Markin Macphail Centre in Calgary, and saw a ‘Future Luge Olympians Wanted’ sign.  Always being interested in trying new sports, he asked his mom if he could try.  She said yes, signed him up for a recruitment camp and a few weeks later he joined the novice team.  For the first three years, Theo continued with both luge and freestyle skiing but at the age of 12, he made the decision that luge was his true passion and where he wanted to focus his time.  At that point, he moved to the development team for a couple years and then in 2020 made the Junior National Team, and shortly after the Senior National Team. 

Since that time, he has had some great successes notably being part of Canada’s bronze-medal winning relay team at the 2025 World Championships. Theo is eager to continue to grow and develop in the sport. His ultimate dream, and goal, is to compete at the Olympics, while aiming for some World Cup and World Championship podium places along the way. 
 
Beyond luge, Theo still enjoys skiing, as well as other sports such as rock climbing, track and field and swimming.  In fact he recently aquired his lifeguarding certification and has been working part time at local YMCA’s.
 
Theo is trained to a Grade 7 conservatory level in piano.  While his luge training schedule does not allow continuing with regular piano lessons, he still loves it and plays every day when he is home and has access to his piano.
 
In his free time, Theo enjoys traveling with his parents, playing his piano, spending time with friends and playing computer games with said friends.
